1. Upload a professional profile picture

Your picture 📸 is the first impression you make for potential clients who visit your profile. Make it friendly, yet professional—and when in doubt, pick something simple.

2. The title you choose matters!

Clearly explain what makes you unique.

Avoid using general terms like "fullstack developer" or "web developer" in your title and, instead, spell out your areas of expertise in more detail (ex: "fullstack developer, Vue.js / Node.js").

3. Identify your location

Indicate your primary location
🌍 (as in, where you reside or work most of the time) in order to be included in the search results when potential clients near you are searching for freelancers with your skills.

4. Add a suggested daily rate

The suggested daily rate you choose should accurately represent your level of expertise and avoid you from either over- or under-valuing your work.

5. Write a detailed description

Don't underestimate the importance of the "You in a Few Words" section. In many ways, it allows you to make a positive first impression that helps clients better understand, at a quick glance, the services you offer, the hard and soft skills you possess, and your past work experience.

6. Add your skills

The more skills you add to your profile, the more likely your profile will surface in search results—which will only serve to increase your chances of receiving project proposals from potential new clients. As a general best practice, we recommend including at least 50 skills in this section. This should include your hard skills, soft skills, deliverables offered, tools and software mastered, and anything else that will make your profile stand out!

7. List out your past work experience

Part of attracting new clients is to hone in on your skills. The other part is by showing how you've put those skills to work during prior (full-time) jobs or projects. So, be sure to list out all relevant work experience in your profile, as this will give potential new clients added reassurance around your skills, expertise, and capabilities.

Also, while you're at it, be sure to request recommendations from past managers and colleagues to not only substantiate the work you've done in the past but also to give your profile an added human touch.

Complete your project preferences

In addition to painting a clear picture around your skills and expertise, be sure to identify your specific project preferences. This will help avoid being contacted for projects that don't suit your preferences – for example, if you're only able to work remotely – and will also help the Malt team provide you with a better overall experience on the platform as we roll out new project matching features.
